East Sabine Awe-Chasm v4a5IV*** (grade pending until there are enough trip logs)

Highest drop 15m

3 hrs of canyoning, located a 30 minute boat ride and 4hr hike from the nearest road!

Public access

A very impressive, super slotted chasm, over 50m deep in places. Not very long or
steep, but still an incredible canyon that is very committing. It is best done over a
day and a half by overnighting at the nearby hut.

Thanks to Richard Bramley for the topo, videos and photos.

  1. Alex Thexton says:

Our trip times were from the west sabine hut. Its about 4-5 hour walk in from the end of lake rotoroa. We put in double ring anchors for pitch 1 & 2. Pitch three was a down climb on the TR right against the wall, there is a small hole under a boulder. Over all a very special canyon, worth the effort on the approach. We had to use head torches in the middle of the day, the slot is so deep and narrow!
