We entered following the Spur after a 2.5hr approach from Mt Robert Circuit carpark. The first half (up to R6) was more slippy down climbs than anything else. The first waterfall you come to (~12m) is not on the topo and has no well potitioned anchors so we down climbed around before coming to the first pitch. We had to walk around a couple of other waterfalls for this reason as well (R5 I think). There is a huge tree that has taken out a lot of other tree TR between R5 and R6. We replaced the webbing on R6, careful of rock fall as you climb out around the edge on TL to reach the tree.
The canyon properly starts at R7, so if you could find a way to start there, do that! The bolts are still in tact for all of the ones that appear on the updated topo. However, the bolts for R8 (20m) are not on TL, they are on TR! We spent a lot of time looking in the wronf place! This whole last section was pretty continuous and start to give glimpses of the lake through the trees. Whiskey falls was awesome! Then we caught the 3pm ferry back to West Bay and managed to hitch a lift back to the carpark!

  2. Oli Polson says:

Did a trip last weekend (9/12/12), we entered the canyon by sidiling around from bushline hut until the bush became thick then dropped down to about 1150m contour and entered the creek there. Encountered lots of debris and another short (5m) pitch that can be avoided on the TR before the topo starts properly.
Used a kayak throw bag to ‘lasso’ the R8 anchor which worked a treat. Could not find any other options…
Final pitch was a bit of a vertical bushbash to start with the bottom is not visible from the rigging position so make sure you’ve measured your rope before committing!!
