Gamblers Canyon v4a1IV* (grade pending until there are enough trip logs)

Highest drop 60m (2x60m)

3.5hrs total (1hr30 approach, 1h30 descent, 30′ return)

Public access

It is a very low water slot that turns into a steep drop which requires a few re-belays. Whilst the waterflow is low, the slot at the start and vertical aspect of the finish make the canyon exciting. The first descent was done without wetsuits in mid-summer on a hot day, just in thermals and raincoats.

An upgrade to the anchors in this canyon was funded by the NZ Canyoning Association Canyon Fund in 2022. Learn more or apply for funding.

First descent: Dannielle Cripps and James Judd 3 February 2021

Thanks to James & Dannielle for the Topo and photos

  1. Sam Davis says:

Expectations for the approach were low after reading the topo but in reality it wasn’t so bad, Very little gorse on the way up. It started very slotted then turned into a nice vertical drop. I believe we had been the first group to descend in a while as the anchors were filled in with shrub and dirt, however other than that they were all good. Give a good thought into the rigging of R8 as we had gotten our rope stuck while pulling which meant a lot of sitting around. R9 had one loose hanger that could do with a tighten. Definitely a worth while adventure in my opinion
