Lagoon Saddle Canyon v4a2III* (grade pending until there are enough trip logs)

Highest drop 47m

Public access

6hrs

This canyon is a rewarding day out with some great abseils in a straightforward multi-pitch canyon. The canyon anchors are bolts with a few naturally rigged. The upper canyon starts with two abseils back to back. There are plenty of escapes all the way down. The highlight is the lower canyon with a spectacular 47m start.

Caution: Not to be confused with Lagoon Canyon (which is further to the northeast)

First descent by Grant Prattley, Nola Collie and James Abbott 2018.

Warm day, very calm in the area after very windy weather at Arthur’s – this was definitely Plan B.
A quick walk in, heading into the water around 1230, reached the river and started walking out 3.30pm, back at car 530pm. Bruce Stream easily navigated.
A note on the pitch after the 48m – there is some damage to a rapide and we tried to remove it and replace with a new one, however couldn’t undo it – not for lack of trying! It was safe to rappel off.
Good fitness outing and the final 3 pitches are always fun.

Great trip out. Lead a larger group with a little experience that wanted a little bit of a step up from the easier canyons in the Canterbury region.
Very warm canyon on a nice day as its North facing the whole time. Would recommend as an early or late season canyon if you get a warm day.
Big pools at the bottom of the major rappels and decent bolting made for a stressless and enjoyable day out for everyone.
